Umit Eser was born in Izmir and completed his undergraduate studies at the History Department of Middle East Technical University, Ankara. He earned an M.A. degree from the History Department at Sabancı University (Istanbul) where he worked as a teaching assistant at the same time. He completed his PhD dissertation concerning the Ottoman bureaucrats in the Greek occupation zone (1919-1922) at the History Department of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2016. His archival research in Nantes and Paris, and studies at the Centre d’Etudes Turques, Ottomanes, Balkaniques et Centrasiatiques (CETOBaC) were supported by the French Embassy scholarships in 2018.
