Eli Shaul

ELI SHAUL was born in Istanbul in 1916. After graduating from the Istanbul Men’s High School, he attended the School of Dentistry at Istanbul University, where he completed his studies in 1941. From 1941 to 1944 he did his military service with the rank of lieutenant. He was one of the founders of the Zionist organization Ne’emanei Tsion (Loyal Lovers of Zion) in Istanbul in 1934. From 1947 to 1950 he wrote articles for Turkey’s newly created Jewish press. His articles were published in the newspapers Şalom, Şabat, Atikva, and Türkiye’nin Sesi. In 1950 he immigrated to Israel with his family. From Israel he sent articles to the newspaper El Tiempo, published by Yitshak Ben Rubin. In 1954, together with Sabetay Leon and Mose Azar, he began publishing the weekly newspaper La Union. In 1959 he published another weekly newspaper entitled Derecho al Buto. From the time he immigrated to Israel in 1950 till 1987, he practiced as a dentist in Bat-Yam. After turning his dental practice over to his son in 1987, he started working on a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews, Folklor de los Judios de Turkiya, which was published by Isis Publishing Company in 1994. Eli Shaul died on May 5, 2004.
